Canon Vixia HF20 Unboxing

21st August 2009

The title says it all.  Taken with a Flip Ultra portable camcorder, I unbox and prepare to charge our new camcorder, the Canon Vixia HF2o.  More to come once it’s ready to use, and I figure out what the heck I’m doing with it. Of course, now that I have our Just Write youtube account setup, I’ve already charged and taken a sample video with the new camcorder. I’ll post more as we get the chance to test it out further.

Facebook Faux Pas?

19th August 2009

Is it wrong to post an ultrasound picture to Facebook or another Social Networking site?  I’ve only witnessed this once and since Amy had an ultrasound on Monday, I was wondering if this is a new fad, or just out of the ordinary.

We tend to keep those types of things pretty close to the vest.  Our parents and siblings get to see them.  If other family members, friends, or someone at work asks, I’ll show them.  Otherwise, we don’t really tend to broadcast that type of information.

Extra motivation

7th August 2009
Yes, I realize that my left foot looks weird. Thank you ankle surgery.

Yes, I realize that my left foot looks weird. Thank you ankle surgery.

This post falls under the category of strictly selfish.  While I can use the excuse that everyone uses – we’ve been busy – the time for that nonsense to stop is now.  When I had ankle surgery in January of this year, I weighed about 185 pounds.  That’s a little higher than what I would prefer, especially being as active as we are.  Because I was forced into a sedentary lifestyle for a couple of months, I put on a few extra pounds. Because I neglected the concept of portion control, I put on a few more.

As of yesterday, I’m tipping the scales at 194.6 (see photo above for proof).  It’s not the heaviest I’ve ever been (225 junior year of high school), but it’s 20 pounds over my preferred weight and way too close to 200 pounds.

The intent of this post is to serve as an extra motivator.  I say extra because being around for Amy and Baby B and able to do everything that’s needed of me as a husband and father is the true motivation.  This is merely part of how I plan to track my progress.  Thanks to our trusty cameras, the DailyBurn website and its iPhone-ready counterpart, the iMapMyRun and iMapMyRide iPhone apps and our Tanita scale, I’ll be able to track my weight loss, workouts, and nutrition facts.  Numerous softball teams, yard work, and (of course) our membership at Powerhouse Gym should help with the exercise.

Long story short, I can only blame myself if I’m not successful.  If you’re curious as to how I’m progressing, I’ve created a page on our site to act as a constant reminder of what I’m working to accomplish.  It’s also a one-stop metrics page.  Why?  Because, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure.”

Once I get the widgets working properly, that page will contain a readout of everything I’m currently tabulating.  There will be pictures somewhere, but probably only for private use.  I’m not a fan of sharing photographic evidence of my increased girth to anyone and everyone that wants to view it via the web.

Now it’s time to shed some pounds.

When there’s nothing to do but wait

5th August 2009

One of my cousins sent me a message today asking if we were “as prepared as we’d ever be” for little Baby B to come around.  When I was crafting my response, it occurred to me that he put it perfectly.  We feel as though we’re as prepared as we can be.

Amy has a bag packed that’s sitting next to her side of the bed, waiting for that moment that we have to make the trip to the hospital for the birth.  Apparently she had a dream that it would come in the middle of the night.

The bag and the flip flops, ready to roll.

Between the baby showers thrown by our family members and coworkers, and a few trips of our own to Babies R Us and Target, we think have everything we need to be ready.  There’s an EvenFlo travel system ready for our first forays out of the house once Baby B is born.  There are numerous boxes of diapers, baby wipes, and other necessities.  The bottles are sterilized, washed, and ready for use.  We have some formula, though we’ve yet to purchase it in bulk.

The nursery is all set up. The crib is assembled, the bedding is clean, and most of the baby’s clothes have been washed and prepared for their first wear.  The bookshelves are starting to fill with books.  The baby monitor is ready to keep two paranoid first-time parents abreast of the child’s every move.

Amy will see her doctor next Tuesday, which will mark 4 weeks from the expected due date.  All we can do now is continue to pray for a healthy child, and wait until the time comes for the baby to be introduced to the world.

Until then, we’ll over-analyze every purchase and comb through every conceivable checklist to help put our minds at ease that we are in fact ready for this.  Ready or not, Baby B will be here sooner than we know it.
